How was Belacan (Prawn Paste) made?
Bagaimana Belacan dibuat.
1) Separation part, separating the prawn from anchovies, or other small fishes.
Bahagian pengasingan. Udang kecil diasingkan terlebih dahulu.
3) After that, the crushed prawns were kept for several days, before crush it again.
Selepas itu, udang yang telah hancur diperam selama beberapa hari sebelum ditumbuk lagi.

Udang kecil yang diasingkan, ditumbuk menggunakan lesung kayu.
3) After that, the crushed prawns were kept for several days, before crush it again.
Selepas itu, udang yang telah hancur diperam selama beberapa hari sebelum ditumbuk lagi.
4) Finally, after dried it, the Belacan is ready to sell.
Akhirnya, setelah Belacan dikeringkan, belacan sedia untuk dijual.

Seperti yang kita lihat, 2 orang pekerja sedang merebus ikan di bahagian belakang bot.

Beberapa orang pekerja sedang mengangkat bakul yang dipenuhi oleh bilis yang telah direbus ke darat, untuk dijemur di bawah cahaya matahari.

The anchovies are a family (Engraulidae) of small, common salt-water fish. The anchovy is a small green fish with blue reflections due to a silver longitudinal stripe that runs from the base of the caudal fin. It is maximum nine inches (~23 cm) in length and body shape is variable with more slender fish in northern populations. The snout is blunt with small, sharp teeth in both jaws. The mouth is larger than those of herrings and silversides, two fish which they closely resemble. It eats plankton and fish fry.
In Malaysia, there is a lot of anchovy, whether in west, or east coast of the peninsular. The anchovies were dried first before it buys by the consumers. And definately, there is a lot of type of anchovy here such as White anchovy (Bilis Putih), Black Anchovy (Bilis Hitam) , Silver Anchovy (Bilis Perak) and ikan Pepak.
Anchovies also heve thier breeding period. In between June and October is the most favourite time for fishermen to hunt the anchovies. So, in that time, the price of the anchovies will drop down, and easy to get it in the market or grocery.
The supplier of anchovies in Malaysia is:
Ikan bilis berasal dari keluarga (Engraulidae) yang kecil, ikan air masin. Bilis ialah sejenis ikan yang kecil, bewarna hijau dengan pantulan warna biru kerana belang perak pada badannya. Maksimum panjanya ialah 9 inci dan badannya pelbagai bentuk. Muncungnya tumpul dengan gigi yang tajam di kedua-dua belah rahangnya. Ia memakan plankton dan fish fry.
Di Malaysia, terdapat banyak bilis, samada di Pantai Timur, mahupun Pantai Barat. Ikan Bilis biasanya di keringkan terlebih dahulu sebelum dijual. Dan sememangnya terdapat pelbagai jenis ikan bilis di Malaysia. Diantaranya ialah Bilis Putih, Bilis Hitam (Halus/Kasar) , Bilis Perak (Bilis Pangkor) dan Ikan Pepak.
Ikan bilis juga mempunyai musim untuk membiak. Pada bulan Jun sehingga Oktober ialah musim Bilis dimana Bilis amat senang didapati, ditangkap oleh para nelayan. Oleh itu, ketika itu, harga bilis akan menjadi murah dan mudah didapati di pasar dan di kedai-kedai runcit.
